Fishing in Fields of Mistria works by casting your fishing rod at dark fish shadows with the charged tool action, waiting for the "!" bite indicator, and reeling in with your use tool action. You can cast in any body of water except the town fountain, and the fish you catch depend on the type of water, the season, and sometimes the weather. Casting itself costs no stamina — stamina is only spent when you actually land a catch.

How to Cast and Catch a Fish

Use the charged tool action while facing the water. A square outline appears in the direction you are facing, and its color shows how far the target tile is. If the tile cannot be fished, a red X appears and the cast fails, so aim for open water. Dark shadows swim along the surface — cast as close to a shadow as you can.

A interested fish will slowly swim to your bobber and may nibble a few times before committing. The moment an exclamation point appears above the bobber, reel in with the use tool action — on PC that is a left click. Reel in too early, before the "!", and the fish swims away and the catch fails. Successful fishing is entirely about that timing.

Fish Shadow Sizes and Schools

Fish come in four shadow sizes: small, medium, large, and giant. The shadow gives you a hint about what is underwater before you commit, which matters most when you are hunting a specific fish for the Museum or a recipe.

Rarely, fish clump together into a School. Fishing a school lets you catch multiple fish in quick succession — the school holds 2 to 5 fish and vanishes once every one of them is reeled up. The School Crasher perk lets you swim into a school to drop half its fish without spending stamina, and the Frenzy perk can spawn a new school right after a catch.

Where to Fish: Every Location

The fish pool depends on the type of water you cast into, so location choice is the real skill in fishing.

  • Ponds: west of The Manor in Mistria, on The Eastern Road, and in The Deep Woods
  • Rivers: on your farm, in Mistria, on The Eastern Road, and in The Narrows
  • Ocean: at The Beach, The Western Ruins, and Sweetwater Farm
  • The Mines: every mine biome has its own fish, from floors 2-19 in the Upper Mines down to floors 81-99 in the deepest biome

Note that the ocean spots at The Western Ruins and Sweetwater Farm cannot be dived — rod fishing only. If you are hunting pond fish specifically, the Deep Woods pond is the quietest spot.

How to Get a Fishing Rod

The first rod is the Worn Fishing Rod. Higher tiers — up through the Iron Fishing Rod and beyond — are crafted like other tools, and each rod you make yourself has a chance to roll bonus stats. Better rods also change your casting range: for Iron Fishing Rods, the charged action measures casting distance in a straight line rather than an area. The first time you catch any species, the game shows you its name, price, and description.

Fish Bait: Attracting Specific Rarities

Fish Bait comes from Terrariums and comes in tiers — Common, Uncommon, and Rare. Using bait while fishing attracts fish of the matching rarity, and as of version 0.15.2 bait and pheromones also work inside The Mines, summoning fish at the expected rarity. Five fish can only be caught with bait: Massive Minnow and Copper Rockfish with Common bait, Iron Fish and Silver Squid with Uncommon bait, and the Golden Eel with Rare bait. We cover bait in full detail on the fish bait page.

Legendary Fish: One Per Season

After unlocking the Legendary perk in the Fishing skill tree, the right weather conditions trigger a message before the day begins: "A legendary fish is nearby...", with a silhouette of the fish. Each legendary is tied to one season and one weather type:

  • Cherry Fish — Spring, ponds, wind, small shadow
  • Lightning Fish — Summer, rivers, thunderstorm, medium shadow
  • Leaf Fish — Fall, rivers, wind, small shadow
  • Snow Fish — Winter, ocean, blizzard, medium shadow

You can only catch one of each legendary per save, so donate it to the Museum's Fish Wing rather than selling it — they sell for very little, nobody loves them as a gift, and a kept legendary currently cannot be replaced. Legendary fish also no longer appear in the Fish Trap.

Diving: Fishing Without a Rod

Dark holes in the water are dive spots. Swim up to one and your character dives in, emerging with loot or one of the dive-only fish — and diving never costs stamina. With the Sunken Secrets perk from the Archaeology skill, dive holes can also produce artifacts from the Sunken set. Dive holes and fish both refresh, so check the water whenever you pass a riverbank.

Fishing Skill Perks Worth Knowing

The Fishing skill levels up as you catch and dive for fish, and its perks reshape the whole activity. School Crasher halves schools for free fish, Frenzy spawns new schools after catches, and the Legendary perk unlocks the four seasonal legendaries above. The skill cap has climbed with recent updates — level 60 as of version 0.14.0 — so there is room to build deep into the tree late in a save.

Fishing FAQ

Does casting cost stamina? No. Casting is free — stamina is only consumed when you successfully catch something. Diving is completely free.

Can I fish anywhere? Almost: any body of water works except the town fountain. The Mines have their own fish pools in every biome.

Can I catch things that are not fish? Yes — wood, glass, and even treasure boxes come up on the line, so a tug is not always a fish.

Can I catch more than one Legendary Fish? No. Since version 0.12.0 only one of each legendary exists per save, and extra copies are removed — so donate the first one you catch.

What Not to Do

  • Do not reel in before the "!" appears — the fish escapes and you start over.
  • Do not sell your Legendary Fish — they are nearly worthless in Tesserae and irreplaceable for the Museum.
  • Do not cast into the town fountain — it is the one water tile in the game that cannot be fished.
  • Do not ignore fish schools — they are the fastest way to stack catches in one spot.
