Fields of Mistria hides four Legendary Fish in its waters: the Cherry Fish, Lightning Fish, Leaf Fish, and Snow Fish, with one tied to each season of the year. None of them will spawn until you unlock the Legendary skill in the Fishing skill tree, and each only appears under the right weather condition, announced by an "A legendary fish is nearby..." message before the day begins. This guide covers the unlock requirements, the location, shadow size, and weather for every Legendary Fish, plus what to do with your catch after you reel it in.

What Are Legendary Fish?

Legendary Fish are the rarest catches in the Fields of Mistria fishing mini-game. After you unlock the Legendary skill, a message reading "A legendary fish is nearby..." appears before the day begins whenever the correct weather conditions occur. The message is accompanied by a silhouette of the one Legendary Fish that can be caught that day, so you always know exactly which target to hunt before you leave the house.

Each Legendary Fish is only available during one season of the year, which means a complete set takes most of an in-game year to finish. As of v0.12.0, only one of each variety can be caught per save. That one-per-save limit is the reason planning matters, because losing or wasting a catch can set you back an entire season.

How to Unlock the Legendary Skill

Legendary Fish do not appear at all until you purchase the Legendary perk from the Fishing skill tree. The perk sits in Tier 3 (level 30) and costs 80 Essence, with the in-game description: "Legendary fish can now appear when the season and weather conditions are right."

You collect Essence by fishing and diving, then trade it at Caldarus' Statue on The Farm for skill bonuses. Because the perk is gated behind level 30, The Escapist notes that newer players are unlikely to catch all four fish within the first year, and recommends unlocking the skill before the second year begins.

All Four Legendary Fish at a Glance

Wiki.gg lists every Legendary Fish with a fixed location type, shadow size, season, and weather requirement:

  • Cherry Fish — Pond; small shadow; Spring; Wind
  • Lightning Fish — River; medium shadow; Summer; Storm (thunderstorm)
  • Leaf Fish — River; small shadow; Fall; Wind
  • Snow Fish — Ocean; medium shadow; Winter; Blizzard

Match the notification silhouette to this list, then head to the matching body of water on a day with the right weather.

Cherry Fish (Spring)

The Cherry Fish is a legendary small pond fish "found on breezy cherry blossom days in spring." It appears only on Windy spring days, so a spring "A legendary fish is nearby..." notification is your cue to spend the morning at a pond.

Ponds exist in three spots: Mistria, west of The Manor at the north of town; The Eastern Road; and The Deep Woods. The Escapist recommends starting at the large pond on the eastern side of town, with the smaller pond near the Manor House as a backup. Because the fish is small, ignore the large shadows in the water and cast at the small ones instead.

Lightning Fish (Summer)

The Lightning Fish is a legendary medium river fish "found on stormy days in summer." It requires Storm (thunderstorm) weather in Summer, making it the only Legendary Fish tied to a storm rather than wind or snow.

Wiki.gg lists its habitat simply as rivers, and rivers can be fished on The Player's Farm, in Mistria, on The Eastern Road, and in The Narrows. The Escapist points specifically to the two stretches of river in The Narrows on the west side of town, with the rivers in town or on your farm as alternatives. Look for medium-sized shadows, since this fish is relatively large.

Leaf Fish (Fall)

The Leaf Fish is a legendary small river fish "found on breezy falling leaf days in fall." Like the Cherry Fish, it only appears on Windy days, but it haunts rivers rather than ponds during the Fall season.

The Escapist recommends the rivers along The Eastern Road as the most convenient stretch to fish. Since the Leaf Fish is small in size, focus on the smaller shadows instead of the larger ones. A windy fall day plus the legendary notification means it is time to work the river until the silhouette appears on your line.

Snow Fish (Winter)

The Snow Fish is a legendary medium ocean fish "found on blizzard days in winter." Wiki.gg gives its required weather as Blizzard, while The Escapist describes the window more loosely as snowy days; treat a winter blizzard as the reliable condition.

The ocean is reachable at The Beach, The Western Ruins, and Sweetwater Farm, with The Beach as the recommended destination. The Escapist suggests swimming through the ocean to reach the small island on the west, while staying careful around other fish that may swim away if you approach too closely. Like the Lightning Fish, the Snow Fish is medium-sized, so it should be easier to spot among the shadows.

Fishing Tips: Shadows, Bites, and Stamina

You cast with the Charged Tool action (left click and hold on PC); a square outline marks the targeted tile, and a red X means that tile cannot be fished. Casting never consumes Stamina, because stamina is only spent once a fish is successfully caught. Shadows come in small, medium, large, and giant sizes, and aiming as close to a shadow as possible gives the best results.

A fish may nibble the bobber several times before committing; the bite is flagged by an "!" above the bobber, and reeling in before the bite scares the fish away. Reel your catch with the Use Tool action (left click). While grinding toward the Legendary perk, cheaper Tier 1 perks help: Appealing Reeling attracts fish to your bobber from a greater range, and Catch of the Day sometimes refunds the stamina a catch costs.

After the Catch: Donating, Selling, and Patch Limits

Donate your Legendary Fish to The Fish Wing in the Museum. Because only one of each variety can be caught per save as of v0.12.0, keeping or selling it means the Museum cannot currently be completed. Despite their rarity, Legendary Fish do not sell for much Tesserae and are not popular gifts — even Terithia is only neutral to them — so there is little benefit to holding one back.

The Escapist reports that donating all four earns a reward that scales with your Museum progress and can include furniture, a recipe, and possibly a treasure chest 待确认 (wiki.gg does not confirm these specific rewards). Patch history has also steadily tightened the rules around these fish:

  • v0.12.0 — players can no longer obtain multiple Legendary Fish; extras already in a save were removed.
  • v0.14.2 — multiples can no longer be gained through the Lucky Haul perk or by swimming through Fish Schools with the School Crasher perk.
  • v0.15.2 — Legendary Fish can no longer appear in The Fish Trap.
